Not much traffic lately so I thought some might enjoy a brief tour of our Exotic Rainforest atrium in NW Arkansas.

Hi Steve, I am wondering how large your GH is? Not only LxW, but also H. Is this a professional conservatory installation or a "prefab"? How warm do you keep it during the winter? Heat underneath or not? Do you have many plants in the ground? I assume some of them are like the fern, etc., but curious. Some day when I am old and gray and my children are out of college I'd love to have a GH/conservatory, but hard telling if it will ever actually happen :D Dan

Hi Dan, the atrium is 24 feet by 24 feet with a 16 foot 4 inch center. I designed the structure just before 2000 and had it built once we moved from Miami. The soil is all prepared to be "tropical" and the plants are watered via an overhead misting system. We treat it as close as possible to the way Mother Nature would grow her plants.

We do use a small natural gas heater in the winter since our temps can often drop into the low teens and at times to zero F. The skin is all approximately 1/4 inch thick GE Thermoclear Lexan attached to cedar. The cedar stud walls are built the same way houses are often constructed in the southern U.S on an 18 inch deep concrete foundation.

I think you'll find almost all the answers you need here: http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Build%2 ... orest.html

If not, just ask. There are things I would do different if I were to build it again, the chief of which is the size. It needs to be 36 by 36.

I'd never get anything done in the house if I had that. It's so inviting and tranquil looking. All you need are a few parrots. How many plants do you think you have in there?

Dan, raising kids didn't leave you old and gray?? I must be doing something wrong. :?
