I've heard oak leaves are a big no no in compost piles, but what if I put them through the chipper first?

Hey Liz,

Not so much a BIG no-no. They are just really tough & take much longer to break down than most leaves. Shredding helps out a lot. Think they are more acidic than other leaves, but not sure, so you may have to adjust the pH of your compost if you have sensitive plants.

I don't really worry about them. If they haven't broken down completely like the other things in my pile, I figure they add a certain amount of "roughage" to the mix to help air & water flow.
