What the heck, let's start a discussion!!

I've been trying to keep from going nuts this winter. I started making a "Garden Planner Calendar". My goal was to pool all garden/planting knowledge into one calendar. Using my longitude/latitude, I charted my sun rise/sets, total hrs of sun light, full/new moon, and ave. high/low temps. for each day of the year. Then I found this stuff about "biodynamics"! Basically, planting by the phases of the moon, and maintaining the garden by the moon as it passes through the zodiac.

There is some proven science in there, then there's voodoo!! I have found many State Agricultural Extention websites that confirm planting by the phases of the moon. But fewer put any stock in zodiac planting.

Is anyone doing this? Do you plan your garden by the moon? How do you do it? Do you really think it works?

My short answer is; "no".

In a by-gone day when reading and farming were not nesisarily tenants in the same person, planting by moon and moon phase may have been utilitarian.

Bank audits used to be spoken outloud too.

Poets used to be able to recite the entire Illiad, or canterbury Tales...

Old skills get replaced.

I agree with this completely Tomc
I grew up in the late 60's/70's, lived the commune lifestyle, gardened since I was a kid...
I had several "friends" who went the biodynamic way. there is some science there, but, not worth the effort, loss of valuable time...and bad production...

They would gather under the full moon on a hill side filling cow horns with everything under the sun, burying them for months...saying "only a small portion of one cow horn will nourish an ACRE of crops...
the science was correct, the application rate was...well Way off...

Long story short..
While I was planting my crops - When the weather/soil was right (Not the Moon)
they danced in the moonlight...
When the Moon was right...they had rain

While I was harvesting a bountiful garden...
they were helping me...for a share of the produce...

A very wise man told me 40 years ago...
Quote:
One thing for sure, them seeds won't grow on the shelf...

In fairness, and as a project (I am a Master Gardener with the University of Minnesota Extension)
I di a side by side comparison...3 years in a row..
Crops started by the Moon phases-Crops planted when the TIME was right

No advantage "By the Moon"
Big disadvantage 2 of the three years ...wet period, late planting...poor harvest

Big Advantage...Planting when the time was right...all three years...

Oh yeah, I wasn't expexting to hear that the horn stuff and the planting, dancing, harvesting by moon light was working!!

But I've read from other University Extensions, that there were test results that did indeed show some benefit to planting/weeding during the phases of the moon. Not by the zodiac, or the chanting and dancing!!

I just don't see how helpfull moon light is, or the moon's gravity??
