I was recently looking through some wine recipes I'd like to experiment with and two of them need ginger root. That brings me to my question...any body in here grow the herb? If so how does it do in a west wisconsin environment, zone 4. Is it easy to grow or fussy, Plant it in a container, or in a herb garden like the other herbs.

Any advice would be interesting as I'd like to see what I could grow now that the season is here.

Thanks all

Steve

Ginger (the edible kind) is a very tropical plant that does not like cool weather at all and likes lots of water. We tried planting some here and the dry weather and cold nights were not to it's liking.

It might grow well for a couple months mid-summer, but it's a big plant and takes a while to develop. Still, it's cheap to try it with some nice fresh ginger from the market. ;)

I'm growing ginger this year. I'm in Zone 8, and I had some success a couple of years ago with it until my DH accidentally killed it - he didn't know what it was. So, I bought some more ginger at the store and when it started to send up a shoot, we planted it under the eaves. We'll see how things go as time goes on.
