While in AZ my Brother-in-law wanted to plant a tree in his front yard for shade. We looked at several trees in the area & tried to match (using the leaf) what grew well to a tree type. We found a tree called Chilean Mesquite at Home Depot, 12 feet in a 24" pot that seemed to match the leaf we were after.

On the south-full sun side of the house we dug a hole 4 ft diameter, 28 inches deep (this is made easier by soaking the ground with water for 2 hours so digging is possible). back filled 8 inches with a mulch/compost mix & local soil(sand). Knocked the bottom off the pot, slide the tree in & leveled it. Then cut the metal bands from the pot, removed the sides & back filled with mulch/compost mix, moisture control potting mix & local soil to 4 inches from the top. Watered well. Added some fertilizer to the outside of the hole (so to not touch the root ball) & finished backfilling with local soil & gravel to allow water to penetrate.

The watering system we used will water the tree with 4 gallons over a 2 hour period Monday & Friday through the winter months (winter: ha ha, still in the 90s). For the summer months the water will go to 3 times/week.

Questions: Good tree for the Tempe area?
Watering rates OK?
Growth rate of the tree?
When/how to remove the support pole from the tree?
Pruning advice?
Clean tree?
Root issues (side walks/drive ways?
Any other advice also appreciated.
