I have three Potentillas which I can only guess are Primrose Beauty and not the Goldfingers that I had ordered from the landscaper three years ago. I have gotten over the huge difference to what I had really wanted and what I actually got.

What I need to know is can I trim the Potentillas way back to encourage new growth and fuller appearance?

Thank you.

Jeanne

You can certainly trim them back, as hard as you like. The only thing is you really want to do it at the start of the growing season. If you do it now you'll chop off all this summer's flowers and end up with a whole lot of fresh growth just ready to flower by autumn. Do it any later and you will end up with a whole lot of fresh growth ready for winter, which isn't good.
