A friend of mine has one that some kind of critter is feeding on. I looked it over and couldn't find anything. They create a big crater, with some of the buds half eaten. I've never grown them, so I don't know what insect favors them. It's not slugs like I first suspected. Thanks! I'll look around on the net too.

Rose chafer is all I've com up with so far, but I haven't found a picture of the bud damage they cause yet.

Gosh - I have to say that peonies are one of the VERY few plants that nothing touches around here. Not rabbits, not deer, not woodchucks, chipmunks, mice, insects - nothing.

The only problem I have with peonies is botrytis disease, which is increased due to our high humidity.

I had something take a few nibbles out of peony buds this year, but it was nowhere to be found and the damage was very limited. Either it didn't like the taste or something else ate it.
