550 wide looks great here, but the image filesize is most important for the folks on dialup. I recommend a thumbnail about 200-250 wide that links to the full size image. That's a good compromise for viewing as-is without clicking but still allows us broadbanders to get the big picture. I know Photobucket let's you thumbnail. So does The Garden Galleries (hint hint)! I think Photobucket's thumb is kinda small, but it does load quickly.
If you post an image much larger than 550, it will be sized down to fit the layout but the filesize will still be just as large. It's almost like a thumbnail, though, since it allows clicking to view the full size.

I'm sorry, I don't use photobucket, but I've heard it's easy. Somewhere in your album (likely on a page just for 1 picture of yours) there should be a snippet of code or a button to get it. You'll be looking for "BBcode" to paste into your posts here.

Speaking of garden galleries... do we get a confirmation email or something when it's ready to go? (I haven't gotten one yet...) :).

That would be a good idea. I guess the answer is no, you don't. I would have assumed the platform did that, but I didn't write the code, so I shouldn't have assumed it. I won't be digging into the Gallery sourcecode but i can tell you I check regularly, usually more than once each day.
Both of you are ready to go.

Hi MrToad! Nice to see you & your Pot people here! :P

To help you with Photobucket. If you already have an account, this will be easier to understand. If not, maybe you should start up a gallery album here & we can all learn together! I've uploaded photos here but haven't tried out linking thumbnails...yet!

At Photobucket, you have 3 tags listed under each photo. If you uploaded pix (that are 550 pixel wide-or not, but as Dan said it'd be a slower load for those on dial-up) you can use the URL line that starts with Img (the 3rd one if you haven't disabled them showing up). Copy, then paste it in your message here.

To make a thumbnail from Photobucket:
It's good to have 2 browsers open at once (1 here, 1 there).
Click the little box next to your photo to checkmark it.
Scroll to bottom of page.
Click button to Generate HTML and IMG code.
A new page comes up with many choices of URLs.
Select the 3rd one down that says: IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards (starts with URL)
Click on it to highlight, Copy & Paste into your message.

Any questions...just holler! :D

On another note, just want to say that the bird and butterfly banner today is captivating to say the least. To whoever created this banner, hats off to you. It is beautiful.

Clickable thumbnails from Photobucket work just fine! (third selection down)

How many photos can be posted on the site per person?
How long do they stay in memory?

On a woodworking forum I used photobucket.
I like this site being able to upload pics directly, it makes it faster

Dave, I haven't counted how many-but LOTS! You can check out my Garden Gallery albums-it's alpha order for most--maybe page 11 or 12. I believe pix are in memory. How long? I would guess as long as the forums are running, unless Dan says otherwise.

We changed servers awhile back & there were a few glitches during the move. Only one member (that I know of) lost all their pix in the move. It does make it easy to upload to the forums. I use several photo sites, for different reasons.

Oh! You're welcome, Chrizty!

An album at The Garden Galleries is 100mb but you can ask for more if you want. Pics loaded directly to the forums here are currently set to stay forever. Web space and bandwidth have gotten so cheap it almost doesn't matter. It would be nice if you wold resize images before uploading directly here. That make it easier on the system and helps those on slow connections. 550 pixels wide is great.

Yes, I have no plans to "prune" the forums of old posts.
