...G. cyclophyllus?

Hi, all.

I bought a Gonolobus cyclophylla(us) last spring. I must admit I knew NOTHING about it when I bought it, I just liked its leaves:

I potted it, and enjoyed its leaves for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, its leaves turned brown and crispy, then they fell off! I was sure it had died, and I had no idea what I did wrong:

About a month later, I looked closely at its brown little corpse, and I noticed GROWTH!!

Since then, it has grown very little, but the growth is still green, and seems healthy. Here it is October 5, 2009:

Now, my questions:

1) Is this plant a winter grower, summer grower, or opportunistic grower?

2) What does it want from me? Lots of water? Very little water? Sun? No sun? Heat? Cool?

Thanks for ANY help! I really can't find much good help online (or maybe I am looking in the wrong places).

Katie

hey Kate,
These like water and warmth and will grow all year if they can get both. I keep mine in plastic pots because terracotta dries out too fast, also the pots are kept on an ol' cake pan that I fill with water every week or so. Treat like a tropical plant not a cactus. Vines like full sun but not the caudex, it prefers to be shaded.

It is now classified as Matelea cyclophylla

Thanks so much for that, Keith!

I will move it to a different place (it's currently getting lots of sun on the caudex as well as the leaves), and start watering it more. I appreciate the help!

Hi, everyone!

Just wanted to give an update, and say a BIG thank you to Keith! Since I started treating this plant like you suggested, it's been super happy! Here it is, between Oct. 5 and now...

Well done Keith and Kate.

A great plant with great leaves and a great recovery.

Thanks again, everyone!

The next step is making it happy enough to give me flowers. Any tips?

Katie

I still haven't figured out how to get it flower regularly. Mine flowered 2yrs ago, but not last year. I think it has to do with moisture.
